ELIGIBILITY

How do I become an English Solicitor?

To become accredited to practice law in the United Kingdom, a foreign attorney must pass the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT), administered under the authority of the Law Society, the licensing authority in the United Kingdom. A US attorney must show that he or she is licensed to practice in one of the 50 United States, and has at least two years' legal practice experience.

NOTE: Attorneys with less than two years practice may take the QLTT examination and apply for deferred licensing following proof of two years practice experience.

Certificate of Eligibility

Prior to taking the QLTT, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility issued directly from the Law Society. Application materials will be included in your QLTT course kit. Certified copies of your academic credentials and/or your bar qualifications are necessary.

As this process can take up to six weeks, please allow sufficient time for receipt of your Certificate of Eligibility.

NOTE: A separate fee payable directly to the Law Society of England and Wales is required.
